Warner Bros. has cast Oscar winner Holly Hunter in its untitled “Batman/Superman” movie, the studio said Thursday. It did not disclose what role she would play, but director Zack Snyder said it was a new role he wrote specifically for her.

Hunter won an Oscar for her performance in “The Piano” and earned nominations for her work in “Broadcast News,” “The Firm” and “Thirteen.”

“Holly has always been one of my favorite actresses; she has immense talent and is always captivating on screen,” Snyder said in a statement. “I had an opportunity to meet her a while back and knew instantly that I had to work with her, so as we began writing the script I made sure to create a role specifically for her.”

Callan Mulvey, last seen in Warner Bros.’ “300 Rise of an Empire,” and Tao Okamoto, who appeared in “The Wolverine,” have also joined the star-studded cast. Henry Cavill will reprise his role as Superman while Ben Affleck will play Batman, Gal Gadot will play Wonder Woman and Jesse Eisenberg will play Lex Luthor. Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne and Diane Lane will all reprise their roles from last summer’s “Man of Steel.”

“Argo” scribe Chris Terrio is working on the script, based on previous work by Snyder and David S. Goyer, the latter of which wrote “Man of Steel.” Warner Bros. plans to release “Batman/Superman” May 6, 2016, the same day as the third “Captain America” movie.
