Will Cardi B meet Joe Goldberg in Season 4 of Netflix’s “You”? Star Penn Badgley can’t say — but not because it’s not happening, just because he genuinely isn’t sure what showrunner Sera Gamble has planned for the fourth season of the hit stalker thriller.
“I don’t know. I mean, I definitely can’t say,” Badgley said on Monday’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” when the late-night host asked him if “You” superfan Cardi B would be appearing on Season 4, after she pitched her own idea for the guest-star spot. “But there is actually, I believe this is true, there is an actual Change.org petition.”
“You said, ‘I don’t know. I can’t say.’ It can’t be both of those things though, can it?” Kimmel pushed.
“I can’t say because I don’t know,” Badgley said with a laugh. “I actually don’t know, I’m not being coy.”
OK, rewinding a bit to explain how this whole Cardi B-Penn Badgley-“You” story began:
“Cardi B tweeted about you. She was excited because you mentioned her in a little chat you were having there,” Kimmel reminded Badgley during their interview, showing a very excited tweet of Cardi’s, which was a reaction to the actor complimenting her use of social media.
You can see that tweet, which was sent Oct. 17, two days after “You” Season 3 dropped, right here:
“And she used more O’s, M’s, F’s — you know, usually she goes with the M’s and the F’s the most, but the O’s and the G’s really shine through here,” Kimmel said. “‘He knows me!’ That’s Cardi B! That’s Cardi Badgley, perhaps, maybe.”
“That’s the first time I’ve gotten that,” Badgley said, laughing.
Kimmel then shared Badgley’s response tweet, which came after he changed his profile picture to one of Cardi B, because she made hers one of Joe from “You,” and it is, according to Badgley, “a thing we have now.”
“Why just ‘I-,’” Kimmel asked Badgley, referring to how his Oct. 19 tweet at Cardi B (see below) is just “I-.”
“That’s an expression the kids have,” the “You” star said, informing Kimmel it’s what you say when you have no words for how amazing something is.
Netflix noticed the social media lovefest happening between Cardi B and its “You” leading man and got in on the action, changing the streaming service’s Twitter bio to say: “Petition to get Cardi B to guest star in Season 4 of You!”
Cardi B took that as her writing prompt to begin crafting her “You” Season 4 storyline, tweeting last Thursday: “So it’s episode 1 and I’m at Paris Fashion week shutting it down! I turn around and there stands YOU Ok finish it off @netflix”
Of course, Badgley wouldn’t tell Kimmel if this could actually happen — because he said he actually doesn’t know — but Kimmel offered up his own idea for a plot.
“You know what would be fun? Cardi B kills Emily in Paris,” Kimmel joked.
