One of the most commercially successful documentaries of the year, "Catfish" has been tossed aside by the Academy's always-controversial doc process, which tends to reward serious, issue-oriented films rather than entertaining, intriguing ones that stir up questions about the nature of reality.
But Nev Schulman, the subject of a film that watches him develop an onscreen, Facebook-based romance that turns into something quite different, is still out there working the movie: just back from London for the film's opening there, he came to L.A. from his New York home to show "Catfish" at theWrap Screening Series and participate in a post-screening Q&A.
Before he did that, Schulman sat for a brief video interview that covered the questions about whether "Catfish" is real or fictional; the rise of Facebook as a subject for movies this year; and the status of another of his online relationships, which began around the time he first spoke to theWrap a couple of months ago.
