Wipeout? ‘Teen Choice’ Awards on the Move After Massive LA Water Main Break (Updated)

Fox show was set to take place in the damaged Pauley Pavilion on Aug. 10. But it will have to switch to a non-UCLA facility, TheWrap has learned

Teen Choice 2014 Pauley Pavilion

(Updated July 31 at 5:33 p.m.: A Bob Bain Productions employee and UCLA employee told TheWrap that the Aug. 10 “Teen Choice 2014” Awards will not be held at UCLA’s Pauley Pavilion due to damage from Tuesday’s water main break.)

UCLA’s Pauley Pavilion is no longer full of water, but it’s full of damage — and just 11 days before Fox’s “Teen Choice 2014” awards are set to take place in the arena.

The facility suffered heavy damage Tuesday when a 30-inch water main broke on Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles’ upscale Westwood neighborhood, causing massive flooding in the area.

The awards show, hosted by “Teen Wolf” star Tyler Posey, is scheduled for Aug. 10 at Pauley Pavilion. Whether or not the arena is repaired by then, the show will go on.

Fox and the awards show production team — Bob Bain Productions — are still assessing the damage and weighing their options. As per usual with a production of this magnitude, “Teen Choice 2014” has a backup facility on standby just in case, TheWrap has learned.

A Bob Bain Productions employee told TheWrap that should the show need to be switched to a “Plan B” location, the second option is a non-UCLA facility.

The ruptured main sent 20 million gallons of water pouring onto the UCLA campus, the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power said Wednesday in a news conference. The water filled two parking garages and flooded several campus buildings, including the Pauley Pavilion — home of UCLA Bruins basketball games.

“As of this morning, the standing water in all athletic indoor facilities has been eliminated,” UCLA Athletic Director Dan Guerrero said in a statement. “Inside Pauley Pavilion, the north side of the building was the most impacted by the flooding. The water reached the lower level of Pauley and affected the playing surface, locker rooms and other ancillary areas, as well as the Pavilion Club.”

UCLA officials say the building, which recently underwent a $136-million renovation, was not structurally compromised. But there is extensive damage to the wood floor. “The largest issue we currently face within Pauley is in regard to the playing surface,” Guerrero stated.

It is unclear when the facility will be ready for primetime, but Guerrero is hopeful that the cleanup and repairs will be complete by the time college basketball starts in the fall: “I am confident that the facility will be ready for our men’s and women’s basketball teams this upcoming season,” he said.

UCLA and Fox had no comment for this story.

“Teen Choice 2014” is set to air on Fox on Aug. 10 at 8/7c.
