“Shameless” star William H. Macy is set to guest star on “The Conners” Season 5, where he will play Smitty, one of Dan’s (John Goodman) best friends from high school, who pays a visit to Lanford.

The ABC spinoff to “Roseanne” follows the family’s daily struggles in Lanford, Illinois, as the clan grapples with parenthood, dating, financial pressures and aging in working-class America. Through it all — the fights, the coupon cutting, the hand-me-downs, the breakdowns — the family prevails.

Series stars include Laurie Metcalf as Jackie Harris, Sara Gilbert as Darlene Conner, Lecy Goranson as Becky Conner-Healy, Emma Kenney as Harris Conner-Healy, Ames McNamara as Mark Conner-Healy, Jayden Rey as Mary Conner, and Jay R. Ferguson as Ben. Back in August, Michael Fishman, who played D.J. Conner, announced he would not be reprising the role for the show’s fifth season.

“The Conners” is executive produced by Tom Werner, along with Sara Gilbert, Bruce Helford, Dave Caplan, Bruce Rasmussen and Tony Hernandez. The series is from Werner Entertainment.

Macy is an Oscar- and Golden Globe-nominated actor, as well as Emmy winner. Most recently, he was in Hulu’s “The Dropout,” a dramatized retelling of fraudulent Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes. He is perhaps best known for his decade-long tenure on Showtime’s “Shameless,” for which he was nominated twice for a Best Actor Emmy Award. His film credits include “Fargo,” “Magnolia,” “Boogie Nights,” “Jurassic Park III,” “Pleasantville” and “Seabiscuit.” The veteran actor made his feature directorial debut with “Rudderless,” the closing film at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival. He has since released two more films, including 2017’s “The Layover” and 2018’s “Krystal.” Macy is repped by Atlas Artists.
