Why ‘Hamilton’ Won’t Be NBC’s Next Live TV Musical – or Even Several After That

“Jesus Christ Superstar Live” producer Neil Meron explains why he can’t bring Lin-Manuel Miranda’s creation to you any time soon

If you were thinking the recent trend of live TV musicals meant you were going to be watching “Hamilton” from the comfort of your own home in the next few years, guess again.

After speaking with “Jesus Christ Superstar Live” producer Neil Meron ahead of his next big production for NBC, TheWrap would like to suggest you keep entering the ticket lottery for the foreseeable future.

“Oh well you know I think there are probably bigger plans for ‘Hamilton,’” Meron said. “You know, ‘Hamilton’ has been enjoying one of the greatest runs in broadway history, so before it ever comes to TV, I’m sure there will be a movie version — that’s so far down the road whether or not we’d ever be able to do ‘Hamilton’ live on TV. It’s the same thing with ‘Wicked.’ These shows are still, especially ‘Hamilton,’  in their initial runs and still healthy as always.”

“Plus there are tours out there traveling around the country,” Meron added. “So, I hope I’m in line to be able to say I want to do ‘Hamilton’ on TV, but I think it’s going to be many, many decades before that happens.”

So what can expect to see before you are old and gray? Well, Meron does have a running list going with NBC. But no, he won’t tell you what’s on it.

“We don’t like to jinx ourselves that much,” Meron said. “But let’s just say there are titles that are continuing to swirl on our lips. But I’m sure the one thing we’ll never do for network TV is ‘Oh! Calcutta!’”

“Jesus Christ Superstar Live” will air on April 1 at 8/7 c on NBC.
