Why Charlie Sheen Gave Lindsay Lohan $100,000 for Taxes

"Charlie has a long history of helping out his friends in many ways," Sheen's spokesman says of his gift to Lohan

That story that Charlie Sheen gave Lindsay Lohan $100,000 for a tax bill? One hundred percent true, says his publicist.

"Charlie has a long history of helping out his friends in many ways and this is just another example of that,” Sheen's spokesman, Larry Solters, told TheWrap.

TMZ first reported Sheen's generosity. According to the website, Sheen sent the check to Lohan's business manager after befriending her on the set of "Scary Movie 5," in which they co-star.

Lohan reportedly owes the IRS more than $230,000 for unpaid taxes on income earned in 2009 and 2010.

(It's unclear where Lohan's income was derived from; a quick scan of Lohan's iMDB page indicates that she starred in just two titles in those years — the direct-to-TV "Labor Pains," and the Robert Rodriguez offering "Machete.")

Interestingly, Sheen likely contributed to his own tax burden with the gesture — according to the IRS, all gifts over $26,000 are taxable, with the donor typically paying the tax.

A spokesperson for Lohan has not yet responded to TheWrap's request for comment.

It appears that Lohan's career could be on the upswing, however; in addition to "Scary Movie 5" and "The Canyons," both due out next year, the "Mean Girls" star appeared as screen legend Elizabeth Taylor in the Lifetime movie "Liz & Dick," which premiered Sunday to a respectable 3.5 million total viewers.

No word on whether Sheen asked for his money back after seeing "Liz & Dick."
