Following its successful debut at the Sundance Film Festival in January, “A Real Pain” has been on a winning streak, taking home BAFTAs, Critics Choice Awards and Film Independent Spirit Awards, among many others. And as awards season comes to a close, it’s nominated for two Oscars: Best Supporting Actor and Best Original Screenplay.

Jesse Eisenberg writes and directs, and stars alongside Emmy-winning “Succession” star Kieran Culkin, who has been cleaning up in the Supporting Actor category, cinching the win at Sunday’s Oscars ceremony. As TheWrap noted in our review of the film, Culkin is “a force of nature” in the movie.

“A Real Pain” tells the story of two cousins who reunite for a trip to Poland to honor their deceased grandmother. As Eisenberg explained to TheWrap at the Sundance Film Festival, he created the story as a way to explore feelings of “privilege, guilt and self-hatred” he’s had as a Jewish American and hearing stories about the deadly antisemitism faced by past generations during the Holocaust and throughout history.
