The network that brought viewers “Game of Thrones” is traveling to a new fantasy world: “Westworld.” But instead of swords, the characters carry pistols.
On Sunday, HBO released a teaser trailer for the TV series, which reimagines the 1973 film that was written and directed by Michael Crichton.
Westworld is the name of a futuristic amusement park with a Wild West theme. Its inhabitants are both human and android, but differentiating the two appears to be a central plot point.
“Are you real?” Jimmi Simpson’s character asks his Westworld greeter. The show’s aesthetic alternates between computers and cowboys.
Production on the show was suspended earlier this year in order to “get ahead of the writing.”
The show also came under fire for reportedly asking extras to “perform genital-to-genital touching” — and the trailer featured an apparent orgy scene.
The series stars include Anthony Hopkins, Ed Harris, Evan Rachel Wood, James Marsden, Thandie Newton, Jeffrey Wright, Sidse Babett Knudsen, Rodrigo Santoro, Shannon Woodward, Steven Ogg, Ingrid Bolsø Berdal, Ben Barnes, Jimmi Simpson, Clifton Collins Jr., Simon Quarterman, Angela Sarafyan, and Tessa Thompson.
The original series is produced by Warner Bros. Television, J.J. Abrams‘ Bad Robot, Jerry Weintraub Productions and Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy’s Kilter Films.
“Westworld” will debut this October on HBO. Watch the trailer above.
