Did Issa Rae just definitively decide the song of summer 2017? Maybe so.
In the teaser trailer for “Insecure” Season 2 that dropped Wednesday afternoon, Issa daydreams at a stoplight in L.A. traffic to the tune of Calvin Harris’ “Slide.”
She sits on a couch alongside her boyfriend Lawrence (Jay Ellis), then flirts with Daniel (Y’lan Noel), and then strides up to her girl gang, which includes Molly (Yvonne Orji), Tiffany (Amanda Seales) and Kelli (Natasha Rothwell). Issa is then snapped back to reality as horns honk behind her, hearkening back to her “Awkward Black Girl” beginnings.
At the end of Season 1, Issa’s relationship with Lawrence was not going well–she cheated on him, they broke up and got back together, then he finds out — and she can’t seem to decide if she wants to make it work or not. Meanwhile, her crush from years ago is back in her life and keeps showing up. And she Molly are wading through rocky waters of best friendship.
“Insecure” Season 2 returns to HBO July 23.
Rae posted the teaser trailer on her Instagram with the caption “July 23 is hella soon.”
