There’s a new trailer for a live-action “Little Mermaid” movie coming out later this year, and no, it’s not a remake of the classic Disney film. Instead, this version takes Hans Christian Andersen’s famous tale and transports it to the Deep South.
The new movie, which is being released by Conglomerate Media and Kingsway Productions, stars William Moseley (“Chronicles of Narnia”) and Loreto Peralta (“Instructions Not Included”) as a brother and sister who travel to a circus in the backwoods of Mississippi that is told to hold the real-life Little Mermaid. Oscar winner Shirley MacLaine also stars in the film, while “Downton Abbey” star Poppy Drayton plays the mysterious mermaid.
The film is directed by Blake Harris and Chris Bouchard from a screenplay by Harris. Armando Gutierrez and Robert Molloy are producing the film, with Jessica Steinbrenner as executive producer.
Disney’s live-action remake of their “Little Mermaid,” meanwhile, is still in early development. Lin-Manuel Miranda, who’s fresh off his first Oscar nomination for his songwriting in “Moana,” is slated to work with the original film’s composer Alan Menken to write new music. A release date for the remake has not been set.
In the meantime, check out Moseley and Drayton in the trailer above.
