Ariana Grande showed off her musical impersonation skills in a tuneful sketch on “Saturday Night Live.”
The artist, who served as both host and musical guest on the NBC staple, channeled her best Britney Spears, Shakira, Rihanna, Celine Dion and Whitney Houston.
The sketch also managed to lampoon Jay Z’s troubled music streaming service Tidal, which experienced a technical breakdown. “We already bit the Kanye and Rihanna album releases,” Kenan Thompson‘s Tidal boss said in the sketch. “We cannot afford another glitch.”
So the team turned to its seemingly shy intern Chloe (Grande) to cover for some of the broken streaming lines of its biggest artists.
And Grande doesn’t disappoint, delivering spot-on versions of songs like Spears’ “Oops!…I Did It Again” and Shakira’s “Whenever, Wherever.” She also clarified when asked if she’s Hispanic. “That’s a common mistake – I’m just very, very Italian,” she said.
She also included a dig at mumble-mouthed Rihanna. “I truly don’t know what she’s saying,” she said.
“Nobody does,” Thompson pointed out.
However, Chloe does decline to fill in for Ariana Grande. “Sorry, not a fan,” she said.
And Jay Pharoah, no slouch in the impression department, makes an end-of-sketch appearance as Jay-Z himself.
