Warner Bros. to Convert Guillermo Del Toro’s ‘Pacific Rim’ Into 3D

"Pacfic Rim" stars Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba and Rinko Kikuchi

Guillermo Del Toro has said he did not want to make “Pacific Rim” in 3D, but Warner Bros. and Legendary Entertainment have decided to convert the film in post-production in pursuit of box-office gold.

This is not uncommon; many studios have done it with major films, as Disney/Marvel did with "Captain America" and "The Avengers." And that's to say nothing of older films coming back in 3D.

However, Del Toro told reporters at Comic-Con that he felt 3D would diminish the sweeping visual aesthetic he wanted for the film.

There is no denying that greater profits await. From the higher ticket prices to the opportunity to screen the film in China with 3D, the move could elevate grosses for what is expected to be one of the summer’s biggest films.

“Pacific Rim,” which portrays a world in which humans must use robots to combat an alien invasion, stars Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Charlie Day, Ron Perlman and Rinko Kikuchi. Del Toro, the cineaste behind "Pan's Labyrinth" and the "Hellboy" films, described it as “robot porn” at Comic-Con while promising both visual grandeur and emotional depth.

The target date for the film's release is July 12, 2013.
