‘Veronica Mars’ Movie Project Sets Kickstarter Records (Updated)

"Veronica Mars" movie Kickstarter campaign was the fastest project to raise $1 million, doing so in just 4 hours and 24 minutes

UPDATE, 8:03 p.m.: The "Veronica Mars" movie campaign didn't just facilitate the series' transition to the big screen — it also set a number of records for crowd-funding site Kickstarter, which was founded in 2009.

According to Kickstarter, the "Veronica Mars" movie fundraising campaign was the fastest project to reach $1 million dollars. It did so in just 4 hours and 24 minutes.

The "Veronica Mars" fundraising campaign is also the most-funded project in Kickstarter's film category, and has the highest goal of any successfully funded project.

Look like the "Veronica Mars" movie is a go.

The project has reached its $2 million goal that it set in its Kickstarter fundraising drive on Wednesday, the same day that series creator Rob Thomas and star Kristen Bell launched the drive.

Thomas had given the drive until April 12 to reach the $2 million mark.

As of this writing, the drive to get the series onto the big screen had drawn a little over 32,000 backers, who had made pledges in exchange for a variety of awards, ranging from a PDF of the shooting script for a $10 pledge to a one-line speaking part in the film for a $10,000 pledge.

"Hallelujah! It's a green light my friends," Thomas wrote on his Twitter account after the goal was reached. "I love you all, but particularly the donors among you."

Fans of "Veronica Mars" — which ended its three-season run on the CW in 2007 — have been hoping for a big-screen version pretty much since the series wrapped.

On the Kickstarter page started by Bell and Thomas, the pair say that Warner Bros. has agreed to cover the marketing and distribution costs of the movie if enough fan interest was displayed.

"I am currently the happiest blonde in a hamster ball the world has ever seen," Bell wrote on the Kickstarter page for its launch. "We have been waiting so long to make this movie dream a movie reality, and it’s because of YOUR commitment, YOUR persistence, that we finally have a chance. We just have one more step to go."

Thomas said that, if the goal was reached, the movie would be filmed over the summer, for a release date next year.
