The Miss America pageant finally said sorry to former winner Vanessa Williams, waiting long enough for another Vanessa Williams-and-a-half to have been born before doing so.
“On behalf of today’s organization, I want to apologize to you and to your mother, Helen Williams,” Miss America Organization CEO Sam Haskell said to the competition’s first black winner during Sunday night’s competition. The pageant forced Williams to resign her 1984 crown when nude photos from her past were published in Penthouse magazine.
Why Haskell had to bring Vanessa’s mom into this is unknown, but it finally closes a painful chapter for a woman who was ruined by — oh, no wait, she went on to immense fame and wealth without her Miss America crown.
