The final trailer for Luc Besson’s “Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets” promises a “universe beyond imagination” and delivers on it with a barrage of otherworldly wonders. Based off this preview, STX’s blockbuster is sure to be a visual feast.
The film stars Dane DeHaan and Cara Delevingne as Valerian and Laureline, a pair of intergalactic agents who have been assigned to protect Alpha, a harmonious metropolis where hundreds upon hundreds of alien civilizations have gathered to share their knowledge and cultures.
Now a mysterious force threatens to destroy it all, and the pair have just 10 hours to find and thwart the disruptor.
Besson’s follow-up to “Lucy” is based on “Valerian and Laureline,” the long-running French comic book series by writer Pierre Christin and artist Jean-Claude Mezieres that began in 1967. (Mezieres also served as conceptual designer on Besson’s “The Fifth Element.”)
The cast also includes Rihanna, John Goodman, Clive Owen, Ethan Hawke, and jazz legend Herbie Hancock.
“Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets” arrives in theaters July 21.
