A buyer has emerged for Editor & Publisher, the venerable newspaper industry magazine shuttered by Nielsen late last year.
Nielsen has officially sold the 109-year-old trade to Duncan McIntosh, the Orange County, California-based publisher of Boating World, Sea magazine and other boating-related publications.
"Such a critical information source for a newspaper industry so
desperately in need of help should not go away," McIntosh said in a statement. "I’ve
been a reader of E&P over the course of 30 years and know its incredible value to readers and advertisers."
McIntosh said he plans to publish a February print issue of E&P, and will continue the magazine’s monthly print publication schedule.
E&P closed its doors in December after Nielsen failed to find a buyer. But shocked staffers, including longtime editor-in-chief Greg Mitchell, were hopeful a suitor would come forward to save the publication; several expressed interest, including mediabistro.com owner Alan Meckler, according to a source.
On Thursday, Mitchell confirmed news of a pending buyer via Twitter, but said he would not be retained as E&P’s editor. Editor-at-large Mark Fitzgerald will take his place.
Mitchell added: "One week ago in a meeting [the] new owner told me flatly, ‘Extremely impressed with your great work and definitely will retain you.’"
Joe Strupp, a longtime senior editor, is out, too.
