Universal has snapped up another David Guggenheim project, shelling out high six figures for “Black Box,” the latest spec script from the “Safe House” scribe.
Guggenheim, a former US Weekly editor, broke into Hollywood with “Safe House,” the Daniel Espinosa-directed film Universal released this February. The thriller, which starred Ryan Reynolds and Denzel Washington, made $205 million at the worldwide box office and Universal has since made a deal with the writer to write a follow-up.
Now Universal has outbid other studios for “Black Box,” which revolves around an Air Force Once incident. After the plane crashes stateside, an investigator uncovers that the plane’s black box contradicts the official line on what happened. This secret endangers the investigator.
Guggenheim is comfortable at Universal and the studio has said it will fast-track the project.
Many studios want to be in the Guggenheim business right now. The scribe has “Puzzle Palace” in development at Summit and his “Stolen,” formerly known as “Medallion,” opens in theaters Friday.
