Justin Lin will direct the next Jason Bourne movie for Universal, according to an individual with knowledge of the deal. Lin directed the last four movies in the “Fast & Furious” franchise for the studio, the most recent of which is the studio’s second highest-grossing film of the year.
The director has been linked to a number of other movies since he announced he would not direct the seventh “Fast & Furious” film, but he is now expected to reinvigorate another of Universal’s crown jewels.
Universal has been releasing Bourne movies since 2002, and Tony Gilroy directed the last film in the series, “The Bourne Legacy.” That was the first to star Jeremy Renner as secret agent Aaron Cross, a role Renner will inhabit once again in the next movie.
“Sherlock Holmes” scribe Anthony Peckham has written a treatment of the script.
“Legacy” grossed $276 million at the worldwide box office, a figure comparable to the first two films that starred Matt Damon as Bourne. The third Bourne movie grossed $442 million.
CAA, Cinetic Management and Sloss Eckhouse LawCo represent Lin. Deadline was the first to report Lin’s involvement.
