Universal Cable Productions acquired the rights to “Dear Zachary: A Letter to a Son About His Father” Thursday, with plans to adapt the documentary into a TV mini-series.
“‘Dear Zachary’ is a beautiful, suspenseful, and ultimately gut wrenching journey about a family that pulls at your heartstrings,” said Dawn Olmstead, the studio’s Executive Vice President, Development. “Working with Kaplan/Perrone we are committed to finding an exceptional writer to adapt this important documentary.”
Kurt Kuenne directed the original doc, which focuses on Canada’s legal system and also serves as a tribute to his murdered friend Andrew Bagby, who is the focus of the movie. His film, which was nominated for best documentary by the Chicago Film Critics Association Awards and the Dallas-Fort Worth Film Critics Association Awards in 2008, is said to have been instrumental in helping reform Canada’s criminal code.
Kuenne will serve as a Co-Executive Producer and consultant on the UCP series, with Josh Braun also serving as Co-Executive Producer.
Kuenne also co-wrote and edited the upcoming documentary “Batkid Begins: The Wish Heard Around The World,” which will open in 2015.
Brian Lutz Management represents him.
