President Trump shocked the LGBT community on Wednesday when he tweeted his decision to ban transgender people from the United States military, prompting politicians, media members and other influential figures to express outrage.

“Trump is pretty sure the T in LGBT stands for Trump,” author Dana Schwartz tweeted following the announcement.

“After consultation with my Generals and military experts, please be advised that the United States Government will not accept or allow… Transgender individuals to serve in any capacity in the U.S. Military. Our military must be focused on decisive and overwhelming,” Trump wrote. “Victory and cannot be burdened with the tremendous medical costs and disruption that transgender in the military would entail. Thank you.”

Human Rights Campaign president Chad Griffin was quick to respond: “I know transgender service members and vets who have done more to serve their country than has in his entire life.”

Senator Jeanne Shaheen said, “Thousands of transgender service members defend our country. They’re patriots & should be applauded not discriminated against by Pres Trump.”

New York Magazine reporter Olivia Nuzzi quoted Trump’s tweets and wrote, “This is actually German for ‘I don’t want to talk about healthcare.’”

Many people are resurfacing a tweet then-candidate Trump sent in 2016 when he promised to “fight” for the LGBT community.
