Reviving his previously-debunked slight of-Twitter trick, President Donald Trump heaped praise on Fox News in a series of early morning tweets on Monday, for the cabler’s recent report alleging that Trump associates were secretly monitored before during the primaries.
“Such amazing reporting on unmasking and the crooked scheme against us by @foxandfriends,” Trump tweeted at 6:15 a.m. “‘Spied on before nomination.’ The real story.”
About 36 minutes later, Trump went at it again, tweeting: “.@FoxNews from multiple sources: “There was electronic surveillance of Trump, and people close to Trump. This is unprecedented.” @FBI”
Last month, the president set off a media firestorm when he accused Barack Obama of Watergate-level corruption, claiming the former president wiretapped his offices at Trump Tower during the campaign. Adding to the frenzy, chair of the House Committee intelligence committee, California Rep. Devin Nunes, announced he had seen evidence that the Trump campaign was “incidentally” surveilled by intelligence agents.
But FBI Director James Comey has refuted the allegation, saying he had “no information” to support claims by the President. It later came out Nunes received his information under dubious circumstances, leading to Democrats and other critics to call for his resignation from the committee.
Such amazing reporting on unmasking and the crooked scheme against us by @foxandfriends. "Spied on before nomination." The real story.
