‘True Detective’ Season 2 Finale Drops 22 Percent in Viewers From Debut Year

HBO drama’s season-ending episode was up 550,000 viewers from last week, however

“True Detective” closed out Season 2 with a bit of a whimper compared to the freshman run’s roar: 2.72 million total viewers tuned in to Sunday night’s finale, down 22 percent from last year’s swan song.

This past weekend, the cop drama did manage to reel in an additional 550,000 total viewers from its prior week, however.

The Nic Pizzolatto HBO show finished with 3.52 million total viewers when Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson were the leads.

The good news for the sophomore run, which starred Colin Farrell, Taylor Kitsch, Rachel McAdams and Vince Vaughn, is that it’s mostly holding its own in terms of gross audience.

The most recent gross audience data indicates that Season 2 of “True Detective” is averaging 11.3 million viewers in gross audience numbers, only slightly below the 11.9 million that the first season grossed.
