Toronto Deals: HBO Acquires ‘Casting By,’ Documentary of Marion Dougherty, Lynn Stalmaster

'Casting By' tells the story of modern Hollywood through the prism of the casting director, interviewing major actors and directors along the way

HBO has acquired the U.S. television rights to “Casting By,” a new documentary about casting directors that offers stories from the likes of Martin Scorsese and Al Pacino, HBO announced on Thursday.

Tom Donahue (pictured left) directed the film, which tracks the last half-century of Hollywood history from the perspective of casting directors like Marion Dougherty and Lynn Stalmaster.

The film premiered at Toronto Monday evening and will screen at the New York Film Festival in October.

Donahue has directed shorts and also edited a bevy of features and TV projects.

The filmmaker brings together stories from Robert Duvall, Woody Allen, Glenn Close and many more to tell of the stories of those like Dougherty, who gave Duvall and Close their first shot.
