"The King's Speech" director Tom Hooper, who took away the Achievement in Directing award at Sunday's Oscar, told reporters backstage at the event that, as gratifying as receiving the Academy Award might be. he's been truly "astonished" by the outpouring he's received from everyday fans of the film.

Hooper told reporters, "I am continually astonished that the personal stories I encounter of how this story has changed them … A friend of mine who actually after coming to a screening of 'The King's Speech' and seeing the scene where it talked about the importance of letting go of your father’s expectations this person decided to come out after seeing 'The King's Speech' … That scene inspired him to be honest in a way he’d never been before."
