Tom Cruise gets cursed by “the ultimate evil” in the final trailer for Universal’s “The Mummy.”
The beginning of “a Dark Universe” gets teased in the trailer, which begins with Cruise surviving a plane crash after he awakens Princess Ahmanet (Sofia Boutella), an ancient ruler from Egypt. Throughout the trailer, we see the princess take over Cruise, who plays Nick Morton, and the two even come face-to-face in combat — but Morton stands no chance.
“It takes a monster to defeat a monster,” Russell Crowe says in the trailer.
In one part of the trailer, Cruise and Annabelle Wallis are in pursuit when a mummy claws its way through the car window and clings onto Cruise’s face. Wallis tries to kick the monster from Cruise’s neck, which sends the car tumbling into an embankment.
Jake Johnson and Courtney B. Vance also star in the reboot, directed by Alex Kurtzman. Jon Spaihts wrote the script, and Kurtzman is producing alongside Chris Morgan and Sean Daniel.
So far, Universal’s modern-day “The Mummy” franchise includes 1999’s “The Mummy,” 2001’s “The Mummy Returns” and 2008’s “The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor.” The films have grossed more than $1.25 billion worldwide.
“The Mummy” is set to hit theaters June 9, 2017.
