Tilda Swinton in Talks to Join Marvel’s ‘Doctor Strange’ Opposite Benedict Cumberbatch

Studio eyes Oscar winner for role as mystic mentor to the “Sherlock Holmes” star

Academy Award winner Tilda Swinton is in talks to star opposite Benedict Cumberbatch in Marvel’s “Doctor Strange,” TheWrap has learned.

The role up for grabs is of The Ancient One, a Tibetan sage who serves as mentor for Cumberbatch’s Dr. Stephen Strange. The character is male in the comic book universe, but at present it’s unclear if Swinton would play the part as such.

Scott Derrickson will direct from a script by Jon Spaihts, and the film will hit theaters on Nov. 4, 2016.

Cumberbatch will star as neurosurgeon Strange, who after a horrific car accident discovers a hidden world of magic and alternate dimensions.

Swinton just wrapped production on the Coen Brothers “Hail, Caesar!” opposite George Clooney and Scarlett Johansson, where she portrays real-life gossip columnist Hedda Hopper.
