Just as it was at Cannes, IFC has become one of the most active buyers in Toronto, picking up its third acquisition among festival films (and its fourth TIFF-related pickup) in Barry W. Blaustein’s “Peep World.”
The black comedy, which stars Michael C. Hall, Sarah Silverman (below), Rainn Wilson, Judy Greer and Ben Schwartz, and deals with four squabbling siblings who come together to celebrate their father’s 70th birthday, but who must deal with hard feelings caused by a tell-all book published by the youngest among them.
“[A]fter a promisingly tart start,” wrote Michael Rechtshaffen in the Hollywood Reporter, “the strident satire stumbles and falls into a sitcom-y hole from which it never emerges, despite the game efforts of its dynamic ensemble.”
The film joins James Gunn’s superhero comedy “SUPER” and Werner Herzog’s documentary “Cave of Forgotten Dreams” on IFC’s slate. The company also acquired the documentary “Unauthorized: The Harvey Weinstein Project,” which did not play at Toronto.
