Three Indian Filmmakers Win Presidential Awards

Filmmakers Madhur Bhandarkar, Shyam Benegal and Girish Karnad will be honored at a ceremony in New Delhi, where the Indian president will grant the prizes

Three Indian filmmakers will receive a literary award this Wednesday from President Pratibha Patil for their contibutions to the Hindi language through cinema.

At a ceremony slated for Wednesday in New Delhi, Madhur Bhandarkar(pictured left), Shyam Benegal and Girish Karnad will be awarded the Ganga Sharan Singh Puraskar prize, granted by the Ministry of Human Resource Development's Kendriya Hindi Sansthan.

This is the fourth presidential award Bhandarkar has received. In 2001 and 2005, the National Film Award for Best Film went to his "Chandni Bar" and "Page 3," respectively. In 2007, he won the National Film Award for Best Director for "Traffic Signal."
