The latest “Thor: Ragnarok” trailer smashed it’s way to a record 136 million views in only 24 hours, TheWrap has learned.
Released on Monday by Marvel’s parent company Disney, the teaser becomes not only the most-viewed Marvel trailer ever, but also Disney’s most-viewed trailer across all its brands, which includes Disney’s live-action and animation divisions, Pixar, Star Wars, as well as Marvel.
The “Beauty and the Beast” trailer was the previous 24 hour record-holder for Disney with 127.6 million views. “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” was viewed 112 times in that time frame. “Captain America: Civil War” held the previous Marvel record with 94 million views.
“Ragnarok” finds Thor (Chris Hemsworth) imprisoned on the other side of the universe without his mighty hammer, and in a race against time to get back to Asgard to stop Ragnarok — the destruction of his homeworld and the end of Asgardian civilization — at the hands of Cate Blanchett’s ruthless Hela.
The Hulk (played by Mark Ruffalo) appears late in the teaser, when Thor is challenged to survive a deadly gladiatorial contest that pits him against his former ally.
The film appears to be loaded with offbeat style, courtesy of New Zealand filmmaker Taika Waititi, who makes the leap to blockbusters following the quirky indie offerings “What We Do in the Shadows” and last year’s “Hunt for the Wilderpeople.” In tone, it recalls James Gunn’s loopy “Guardians of the Galaxy.”
The Hollywood Reporter first reported this news.
“Thor: Ragnarok” opens in the U.S. on Nov. 3.
