As TheWrap first reported two weeks ago, longtime industry journalist Anne Thompson’s is moving from Variety to IndieWire as an independent blogger, and her new gig begins on Monday.
“Thompson on Hollywood” had been on Variety.com since March 2007. She was let go in January, but the site continued to run the column through July. She now strikes out as an independent blogger, and will be part of the IndieWire network.
The column will continue to focus on the film business but also expand coverage to include entertainment and cultural trends, according to a statement from IndieWire.
“Anne Thompson has long been one of the most insightful writers covering the film industry — from the boulevards of Hollywood to the canyon roads of independent film,” said IndieWire CEO Rick Allen, in the statement. “With Anne’s arrival, and by incorporating (her column) within the indieWIRE network, we’ll be able to take our leadership to a new level, and bring an even broader scope of information and analysis to industry insiders and fans.”
A contributor to the New York Times and Washington Post, Thompson has served as film columnist at Variety, and deputy editor of Variety.com. She also was the deputy film editor at the Hollywood Reporter, the west coast editor of Premiere, a senior writer at Entertainment Weekly and west coast editor for Film Comment.
She wrote the film industry column "Risky Business" for L.A. Weekly and the Los Angeles Times syndicate.
