‘Old Jack’ Explained: ‘This Is Us’ Season 2 Finale Imagines ‘What If’ on Kate’s Wedding Day

Susan Kelechi Watson tells TheWrap what to expect when Papa Pearson appears in the present

Fans’ tear ducts are already prepped for the worst going into Tuesday’s Season 2 finale of “This Is Us,”  thanks to last week’s promo for Kate (Chrissy Metz) and Toby’s (Chris Sullivan) wedding episode — appropriately titled “The Wedding” — which featured an elderly version of Jack Pearson.

Obviously, fans were shook to see Milo Ventimiglia’s character alive and well in the present day. But star Susan Kelechi Watson tells TheWrap that you’ll be shedding “happy tears” when you find out why.

“Old Jack? Oh man, that’s a good one,” Watson, who plays Randall’s (Sterling K. Brown) wife Beth, said. “Here’s the thing. It moved me personally just to be able to see Jack in this version of Jack. Obviously, you know that Jack is gone, but the fact that we get to imagine him, what if he had been around? It’s really moving. So I think fans should be prepared for that.”

“I’ve said this before, I am the one who cries the least in the cast and that pulled at my heartstrings so hard,” Watson continued. “Because you know we’ve become so attached to this character, and what he is and the type of man he is. And you just know he’s the type of person who would have gone all out for Kate’s wedding. So to get a glimpse of him and his older age, especially when Kate is getting married, it just really feels quite moving, quite touching. And it’s a lovely way to also just remember him.”

The Season 2 finale of “This Is Us” airs tonight, Tuesday at 9 p.m. on NBC.
