Following Donald Trump’s stunt of shopping for and buying a Tesla from Elon Musk on the White House lawn this week, “The View” host Whoopi Goldberg decided to create a jingle for the “infomercial,” as she referred to the event.
Well, more accurately, she decided to re-create a jingle. But that’s just because, after watching the footage of Trump marveling over the vehicles, the ABC moderator was reminded of certain commercials she’d seen before.
“All I could think of when I saw this were these TV commercials from when I was living in California,” Whoopi said, teeing up archival footage.
At that, an ad from 1988 for Cal Worthington “and his dog Spot” — for those unfamiliar, Spot was actually a goat, not a dog — began playing. Worthington was a car dealer in the ’80s, with a jingle set to the tune of “If You’re Happy and You Know It.”
But, as the old commercial ended, Whoopi offered a rewritten version for Musk, still set to the same tune.
“If you wanna buy a Tesla call Elon,” she sang. “You can buy one sitting on the White House lawn! The economy may crash, but it’s Elon who needs cash, if you wanna buy a Tesla call Elon!”
As she sang, co-host Joy Behar happily joined in, eventually starting a sing-along with the whole table, who cracked up at the initial comparison to Worthington’s ads.
“The View” airs weekdays at 11 a.m. ET on ABC.
