Nolan (Nathan Fillion) and Juarez (Lisseth Chavez) are in full action movie mode in Season 7, Episode 11 of “The Rookie,” aptly titled “Speed.” A throwback to the 1994 L.A. action classic of the same name, the new episode finds Nolan and Juarez trapped in a hostage situation on a bus while undercover for a public safety initiative. Meanwhile, the Mid-Wilshire team mobilizes to hunt down the suspects and get all the passengers off safely.
Directed by Jan de Bont (“Twister”), the original “Speed” stars Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock as a cop and a bus passenger, respectively, who have to keep their bus speeding through the streets of L.A. at over 50 mph. If they fail, or if anyone tries to get off, the bus is rigged to blow, thanks to the handiwork of a vengeful retired bomb squad member (Dennis Hopper).
As for “The Rookie” episode, you’ll have to tune in to see how “Speed” pays tribute to the beloved action film, but you can count on plenty of references, as well as some of the series’ signature found-footage style use of body cams and security footage as the officers navigate the hostage situation. For now, you can get a sneak peek in our exclusive preview clip above.
Here’s the full synopsis for the latest episode, which also teases some screentime for more fan-favorite “Rookie” duos (yes, including Chenford):
“John and Celina find themselves in a hostage situation while undercover for a public safety initiative. While Angela and Nyla investigate the suspects, Tim challenges Lucy’s decision-making skills.”
