“The Last of Us” Season 2 is already breaking viewership records. The trailer for the next installment of HBO’s video game adaptation snagged 158 million views across platforms after just three days, swiftly claiming the spot as the most-watched trailer for any HBO and Max original within that time period.

The clip’s performance is also a milestone for the show itself, marking a 160% improvement from previous “Last of Us”-related trailers and teasers — a clear sign that audience interest is high for Season 2. Season 1 episodes previously averaged nearly 32 million U.S. cross platform viewers.

Season 2, which follows the events of the video game’s 2020 sequel “The Last of Us: Part II,” will see the effects of Joel’s (Pedro Pascal) Season 1 decision play out as he and Ellie (Bella Ramsey) are drawn into a conflict with both each other and a world that’s even more dangerous and unpredictable than the one they left. The season will be seven episodes.

In addition to Pascal and Ramsey, “The Last of Us” Season 2 sees the return of Gabriel Luna as Joel’s brother Tommy and Rutina Wesley as Tommy’s wife Maria. Also joining the cast are newcomers Kaitlyn Dever as Abby, Isabela Merced as Dina, Young Mazino as Jesse, Ariela Barer as Mel, Tati Gabrielle as Nora, Spencer Lord as Owen, Danny Ramirez as Manny and Jeffrey Wright as Isaac. Catherine O’Hara is also set to guest star.

“The Last of Us” is written and executive produced by Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann. The pair is also set to direct episodes in the upcoming season alongside new additions Mark Mylod (“Succession), Nina Lopez-Corrado (“Perry Mason”), Stephen Williams (“Watchmen”) and Kate Herron (“Loki”), and returning director Peter Hoar, who was nominated for an Emmy for Season 1’s third episode, “Long, Long Time.”

In addition to Mazin and Druckmann, “The Last of Us” is executive produced by Carolyn Strauss, Evan Wells, Asad Qizilbash, Carter Swan and Rose Lam and co-produced by Sony Pictures Television.

“The Last of Us” Season 2 premieres April 13 on HBO and Max.
