Ethan Hawke rounded up an impressive roster of friends and former costars to voice stars Paul Newman, Joanne Redford, Robert Redford and more in his docuseries, “The Last Movie Stars.” Here’s who voices whom in the 6-part series, which is now streaming on HBO and HBO Max.
George Clooney as Paul Newman
While we hear from Newman himself in archival footage, Clooney capably fills in for the late actor in voiceover. Newman died in 2008 at age 83.
Laura Linney as Joanne Woodward
The “Ozark” star stands in for the “Three Faces of Eve” Oscar winner. Woodward, now 92, was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 2007.
Alessandro Nivola as Robert Redford
Redford, Newman’s equally iconic costar in “The Sting” and “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” is voiced by Nivola, who is known for “The Many Saints of Newark” and “American Hustle.”
Brooks Ashmankas as Gore Vidal
The theater actor, who is currently costarring opposite Neil Patrick Harris in Netflix’s “Uncoupled,” steps in as Gore Vidal, the late author who was one of Paul and Joanne’s closest friends. (Vidal also shared the screen with Hawke in “Gattaca.”)
Steve Zahn as Donald “Duck” Dobbins
Zahn, who’s costarred with Hawke in “Reality Bites,” “The Good Lord Bird,” and “Hamlet,” lends his voice to Joanne Woodward’s high school boyfriend.
Tom McCarthy as Sidney Lumet
The “Spotlight” director voices the late, legendary Sidney Lumet, who directed Newman in the 1982 drama “The Verdict.” Lumet’s final film was 2007’s “Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead,” which costarred Hawke and Philip Seymour Hoffman. Lumet also directed Woodward in 1960’s “The Fugitive Kind.”
Josh Hamilton as George Roy Hill
Hawke’s costar from “Alive” voices Hill, who directed Newman and Redford in the Best Picture Oscar winner “The Sting.”
Vincent D’Onofrio as Karl Malden
Hawke’s frequent costar (their collaborations include “The Newton Boys” and “The Magnificent Seven”) voices “A Streetcar Named Desire” actor Malden, who was a member of the famed Actors Studio along with both Paul and Joanne.
Bobby Cannavale as Elia Kazan
The “Station Agent” actor voices “East of Eden” director Elia Kazan. Newman auditioned for the role, but lost out to James Dean.
LaTanya Richardson Jackson as Maude Brink
The Tony-winning actress (who is married to Samuel L. Jackson), voices Joanne’s aunt, Maude Brink. Like Woodward and her family, she also hails from Georgia.
Zoe Kazan as Jackie Witte, Paul Newman’s first wife
“The Big Sick” actress voices Newman’s first wife. Jackie and Paul were married from 1949 to 1958 and had three children together. Kazan is the granddaughter of director Elia Kazan.
Mark Ruffalo as screenwriter Meade Roberts
The Hulk star voices the screenwriter who worked frequently with Tennessee Williams, including on the 1960 film, “The Fugitive Kind,” which starred Woodward, Marlon Brando and Anna Magnani.
Rose Byrne as Estelle Parsons
The “Bridesmaids” actress voices the “Bonnie and Clyde” Oscar winner, who costarred with Woodward in “Rachel, Rachel,” which Newman produced and directed. Parsons, now 94, has had recurring roles on “The Connors” and on “Grace & Frankie.”
