Martin Scorsese’s “The Irishman” led all films in nominations for the Critics’ Choice Awards, which will serve as a showcase for all things Netflix on both the film and television sides when it takes place on Jan. 12.
“The Irishman” received 14 nominations in the 23 film categories, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay and acting nominations for Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci and Al Pacino. Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood” was second with 12 nominations, followed by “Little Women” with nine, “1917” and “Marriage Story” with eight and “Jojo Rabbit,” “Joker” and “Parasite” with seven.
Netflix was the most-nominated studio, with 30 nominations spread among “The Irishman,” “Marriage Story,” “Dolemite Is My Name,” “The Two Popes,” “Atlantics” and “I Lost My Body.” Sony was second with 24 nominations, led by “Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood” but also including “Little Women” “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood” and “Spider-Man: Far From Home” (plus two more for Sony Pictures Classics’ “Pain and Glory”).
On the TV side, Netflix landed an additional 31 nominations, second to HBO’s 33.
In the Critics’ Choice Best Picture category, the most unexpected nominee was the Safdie brothers’ “Uncut Gems,” which also landed nominations for its director, its editing and star Adam Sandler. The other nominees in the category were “The Irishman,” “Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood,” “1917,” “Little Women,” “Marriage Story,” “Jojo Rabbit,” “Joker,” “Parasite” and “Ford v Ferrari.”
Since the Oscars expanded its Best Picture category in 2009, at least six Critics’ Choice Awards nominees have landed Oscar nominations each year, with eight of the 10 doing it most years.
In other categories, the Critics’ Choice Awards long ago abandoned any pretense of being accurate Oscar predictors by aiming to honor as many films as possible. Most categories contain at least six nominees, with eight of them – including Best Actor, Best Actress and Best Director – expanding to seven slots.
Still, several films thought to be legitimate awards contenders were completely bypassed by Critics’ Choice voters, including Richard Jewell,” “A Hidden Life,” “Waves,” “Motherless Brooklyn,” “Just Mercy” and “The Report.”
In the TV categories, the Netflix miniseries “When They See Us” led with six nominations, with “Schitt’s Creek” and “This Is Us” landing five and “Barry,” “Chernobyl,” “Fleabag,” “Fosse/Verdon,” “Game of Thrones,” “The Crown,” “The Good Fight,” “Unbelievable” and “Watchmen” each receiving four.
The 25th annual Critics’ Choice Awards will take place on Sunday, Jan. 12 at Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, and will be broadcast on the CW Network.
The awards are voted by members of the Critics Choice Association, which consists of television, radio and online critics and journalists who cover film and television. (TheWrap’s Steve Pond and Beatrice Verhoeven are voting members of the organization.)
