‘The Crown’ Lands Olivia Colman to Replace Claire Foy as Queen Elizabeth

“The Crown” has cast its next Queen Elizabeth.

Olivia Colman will replace Claire Foy in the pivotal role for Seasons 3 and 4 of the Netflix drama series. The move stems from the decision to age up the character, as each season comprises roughly a decade in the life of the royal.

The series had been planning all along to recast the role at the end of the first two seasons, meaning that Foy will reprise the role in the second season that launches on Netflix on Dec. 8.

Colman is a three-time BAFTA TV Award winner who is best known stateside for roles in such films as “The Lobster,” “The Iron Lady” and “Hot Fuzz.”

The actress, who picked up a Golden Globe for her role on “The Night Manager,” takes over in the “Crown” part that landed Foy a Golden Globe for Season 1.

Expected to return to “The Crown” are cast members Matt Smith (Prince Philip), Vanessa Kirby (Princess Margaret), Jeremy Northam (Antony Eden) and Victoria Hamilton (the Queen Mother).
