STX has just released a new trailer for their upcoming thriller “The Circle,” and it is filled with intriguing elements: A “Black Mirror”-esque distrust of technology, Emma Watson and John Boyega sharing the screen together, and Tom Hanks as a…villain?
Watson plays Mae, a bright young lady who gets the job of a lifetime at a top-tier Silicon Valley company called The Circle. She quickly rises through the ranks, but then something weird happens. The company’s CEO, Eamon Bailey (Hanks), wants her to be a part of a project that could help her ailing father with his MS. But that project requires her to completely sacrifice her privacy, turning her life over to countless cameras controlled by The Circle. With the help of the project’s lead designer (Boyega), she tries to dive deep into The Circle to find out what Bailey is really planning.
“Boyhood” star Ellar Coltrane also stars in the film as Mae’s boyfriend, with Karen Gillan, Patton Oswalt, and Bill Paxton also in the cast. Based on the Dave Eggers novel of the same name, “The Circle” is directed and written by indie director James Ponsoldt, who has directed Sundance hits like “Smashed” and “The Spectacular Now.”
“The Circle” hits theaters April 28. Watch the trailer in the clip above.
