TCA: ‘Modern Family’ Kids Lament Ed O’Neill’s Emmy Snub

The youngest cast members from “Modern Family” discuss the lack of nominations for the patriarch of the sitcom’s clan

"Modern Family" star Ed O'Neill was one of the most noticeable omissions among the nominees for this year's Emmy awards. O'Neill and some of his young co-stars from the hit sitcom discussed his Emmy snub at the annual TCA summer press tour Sunday.

O'Neil was the only one of the show's adult cast members not to be nominated for an Emmy award. Overall, "Modern Family" received 14 nominations.

At TCA, O'Neill suggested that the show's child actors were the ones who really got snubbed by Emmy voters.

"The truth is, if you're nominated or you're not nominated, you don't have a lot of options, for all I know, the kids could have been nominated before me … the kids were phenomenal," O'Neill said.

Asked if he felt left out of the Emmy race, 12-year-old Rico Rodriguez, who plays Manny on the show, said, "They probably have something in store for us later in the years; it'll be great to even go to the Emmys."

Nolan Gould, an 11-year-old actor who plays Luke, the youngest member of the show's Dunphy clan, said he feels all of the people who work on "Modern Family" are worthy of an award. "I think everybody on the show deserves an Emmy," Gould said.

Ariel Winter, who plays Gould's sister on the show agreed that everyone involved with the production has done amazing work, but she also said O'Neill's lack of a nomination was a particularly glaring omission.

"I'm actually kind of surprised Ed O'Neill didn't get nominated … hopefully somebody will put a bug in their ear to have him win next year," Winter said.
