Don't expect Malin Akerman's character on ABC's new comedy series, "Trophy Wife," to live up to the title.
When Akerman first saw the title of the series, she thought, "Oh hell no, I'm not playing a trophy wife," she said at Sunday's Television Critics press tour. But then she read the script.
"I thought it was brilliant. It's the complete opposite of a trophy wife," she said.
The producers are hoping that viewers will catch on to its tongue-in-cheek title.

"The title was always meant to be ironic," executive producer Lee Eisenberg. "When you look at the promos, that kind of counterbalances it. There's a version of the show where she's the trophy wife in a traditional sense, but what's more interesting as the writers of the show is to make her fall on her face and at every single turn not like a trophy wife."
"The trophy wife part is really more about how others look at her," executive producer Emily Halpern added.
The comedy revolves around Kate (Akerman) who marries Pete (Bradley Whitford), a much older man with two ex-wives (Michaela Watkins, Marcia Gay Harden) and three children from those marriages.

The series is actually "loosely based" on executive producer Sarah Haskins' own life. She married a man 20 years her senior who had actually married three times before, not two as in "Trophy Wife."
"We didn't think America would accept that," Haskins said to laughter. "So, we did two."
