This fall, CBS will premiere a new daytime talk show called "The Talk" hosted by Sarah Gilbert, Julie Chen, Marissa Jaret Winokur, Leah Remini, Holly Robinson Peete and Sharon Osbourne.
All six of the show's hosts spoke on a TCA panel Wednesday, and much of the discussion focused on the unique backgrounds of two members of "The Talk" team — Gilbert is a lesbian, and Remini is a member of the Church of Scientology.
All of the women discussed how the show would be a frank, intimate conversation, including discussion of their personal lives. "One thing that my daughter did say was totally off limits was her menstrual cycle," Robinson Peete said.
Gilbert and Remini were both asked how their unique backgrounds might affect their participation on the show.
"This is a whole new world for me," the former "Roseanne" actress said.
The press release for "The Talk" included the names of the spouses of all of the show's hosts except for Gilbert's. Gilbert said she left her partner's name off the announcement because she didn't want to come out "in a CBS press release" and preferred to start discussing the matter at TCA, though in actuality she didn't have much else to say about it.
When asked if she felt her religious beliefs would play a role in the show's discussion Remini said, "Not at all."
Remini rejected the idea that she could expose people to a different view of the controversial Scientology by talking about it on air. "I love to make people laugh, I love entertaining people … that's what I do, that other thing [Scientology], that's not part of my job," Remini said.
Gilbert chimed in, saying, "I also think it's dangerous to look at people through one lens … take one thing and say that's what they're going to represent … Leah has a lot of parts to her and that's what she'll bring to the show."
