Sutton Foster, the two-time Tony Award winner and breakout star of “Thoroughly Modern Millie,” is returning to Broadway to star opposite Hugh Jackman in a revival of “The Music Man,” producer Scott Rudin announced Monday.
Foster has been on a six-year hiatus from the Broadway stage, but she will star as Marian Paroo in the new production of Meredith Wilson’s “The Music Man,” which is directed by Jerry Zaks. Warren Carlyle is choreographing, and performances will begin on Sept. 9, 2020 and it will officially open on Oct. 22, 2020 at a Shubert theatre to be announced.
“There were bells on a hill but I never heard them ringing. No, I never heard them at all. Till there was Hugh,” Foster said in a statement.
In addition to “Thoroughly Modern Millie,” Foster has also starred in “The Drowsy Chaperone,” “Little Women,” “Shrek The Musical” and “Violet.” She currently stars on the show “Younger.”
Jackman, who plays Professor Harold Hill in the new production, also welcomed Foster to the cast in a tweet, along with a photo of them dancing together at the Tony Awards.
“The Music Man” reunites the creative team of the recent revival of “Hello, Dolly!” starring Bette Midler. In addition to Rudin, Zaks and Carlyle, Santo Loquasto (Scenic & Costume Design), Natasha Katz (Lighting Design), Scott Lehrer (Sound Design), and David Chase (Dance Arrangements) are all part of the revival. Jonathan Tunick will create orchestrations, and Patrick Vaccariello joins the team as “The Music Man’s” musical director.
