Cat Grant (Calista Flockhart) was both an inspirational mentor and a bitter antagonist throughout the first season of “Supergirl”. But with new horizons and new opportunity ahead of her, the character has departed the show for now, leaving behind a legacy of hard lessons and witty quips. Until her hopeful return, we’ve gathered up some of her best moments from throughout the show so far.
Appearing on “The Talk”
Flockhart filmed a scene with geek icon and actress Aisha Tyler as she and the hosts of “The Talk” mocked-hosted an interview with Cat about the breakout heroine and Cat’s role in her development. Of course, Cat took all of the credit for Supergirl’s expert branding, and made it clear that she was on a mission to find out who the heroine truly was.
Interviewing Supergirl
After James Olsen sets up an interview between Cat and Supergirl, the show’s heroine took Cat to a remote location and let her ask a few questions. This is another great scene that shows the power dynamic between Supergirl and Grant at the beginning of the show, and watching it again serves as a reminder that the two didn’t always get along as well as they do now.
Millennial Hate
If the creators of Supergirl were looking to make fans dislike Cat from the start, they did it perfectly by having her recite the same lines that many Millennials hear on a daily basis. When Kara comes in for her first interview with Grant, the media guru laments over those who make up Kara’s generation and their need for trophies from helicopter parents. Like a column straight out of The New York Times, Grant tells Kara that she needs to work for what she wants, as if Kara is not in fact in her office for the sake of gainful employment.
Getting Hacked
Much like several celebrities and prominent figures in pop culture, Grant found herself in the middle of a hack, her personal e-mails released to the public. This scene contains one of Cat’s best “Mean Girl”-type quips: after being asked whether or not she’d publish Lois Lane’s personal e-mails, Grant says, “only if I wanted people to die of boredom.”
Naming Supergirl
No matter what Kara may have had to say about the title, Cat Grant knew that “Supergirl” had a ring to it from the start. Cat’s assertion of the title was a perfect early display of her power over the media, and what that would mean to Supergirl’s future.
“I want mystery. I want intrigue. I want ‘The Blur’.”
Cat’s interactions with The Flash (Grant Gustin) were some of the funniest of Season 1. Along with her prophetic quip about James, Barry, Wynn, and Kara looking like the “attractive yet non-threatening racially diverse cast of a CW show.” Little did the fans know that “Supergirl” would move right on over to The CW for its second season.
“You have 48 hours.”
Cat Grant is a unique kind of gruff mentor, cold and calculating as opposed to warm and welcoming. While she constantly reminds Kara of her talents, this scene truly sums up how Cat presents her advice, as well as her belief in Kara’s potential for success.
Saying Goodbye to Supergirl
Cat’s final scene with Supergirl is a wonderful meeting of the minds, in which Cat plays up her ego as a way to safeguard herself from a second painful goodbye. This is because what happens just before.
Saying Goodbye to Kara
Where Cat’s farewell to Supergirl was a confident nod between equals, it was her heartfelt goodbye to Kara Danvers that left the biggest lump in fans’ throats.
