Rob Lowe has joined the cast of “Super Troopers 2,” the sequel to the original 2001 clumsy cop comedy, TheWrap has learned.
Production on the movie began last week in Boston.
Broken Lizard, the comedy team behind the original film, raised more than $4.5 million during a crowd-funding campaign on Indiegogo last year to fund “Super Troopers 2,” shooting past its initial goal of $2 million.
Fox Searchlight is releasing the film domestically.
Broken Lizard members Jay Chandrasekhar, Kevin Heffernan, Steve Lemme, Paul Soter and Erik Stolhanske wrote and are starring in the film once again, with Chandrasekhar directing.
Lowe recently joined the CBS drama series “Code Black,” which will return for its second season this fall.
The actor, who starred in the Fox comedy “The Grinder” last season, shifts gears for the CBS medical drama to play Col. Ethan Willis, a U.S. Army doctor who was previously a member of the Combat Casualty Care research program in Afghanistan. He has been pulled from that assignment and embedded with the staff of Angels Memorial, only to find that the two jobs are not all that different.
Lowe is repped by Brillstein Entertainment Partners, WME and O’Melveny & Myers.
