‘Super 8’ Makes $1.5M in Early Screenings

J.J. Abrams’ monster movie played in 324 locations as part of Twitter-sponsored screenings

J.J. Abrams' "Super 8" scared up roughly $1 million in 324 locations on Thursday as part of an advance Twitter-sponsored set of screenings, according to studio estimates.

In addition, it added $500,000 to that take with a set of midnight screenings in 1,200 theaters.

Cloaked in secrecy, the monster movie arrives with little star power save for its big name director and executive producer Steven Spielberg. Though tracking had initially been soft, an aggressive television ad buy from Paramount and strong word-of-mouth will probably drive the horror film to an over $35 million opening.

The movie opens Friday at 3,379 locations.
