Kevin Smith has come to the defense of “Suicide Squad” and director David Ayer after the bulk of reviews for the highly-anticipated DC Comics movie have been overwhelmingly bad.

Smith posted a photo of himself and Ayer on Instagram, saying how much he enjoyed Ayer’s previous films “End of Watch” and “Fury.”

“When I heard he was shepherding a cinematic ‘Suicide Squad,’ my already-high interests in a DC Comics movie shot over the top: What would a gritty guy like Dave do with the likes of Deadshot & Harley Quinn? Well I think he made magic and did DC Comics proud,” Smith wrote. “The ‘Squad’ movie doesn’t look like any other comic book flick I’ve ever seen.”

Smith also offered praise for Margot Robbie‘s performance as Harley Quinn, The Joker’s psychotic girlfriend and also Smith’s daughter’s namesake.

“I’ll be heading back to see it again tonight so expect a brand new ‘Fat Man On Batman’ review soon,” he concluded, referencing one of his many podcasts.

“Suicide Squad” has been one of the most anticipated movies of the year, with fans chomping at the bit ever since the first trailer dropped.

At the time of this publishing, however, the film holds a dismal 27 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, thanks to some truly savage reviews. The critics consensus on the site sums up the reviews as follows: “‘Suicide Squad’ boasts a talented cast and a little more humor than previous DCEU efforts, but they aren’t enough to save the disappointing end result from a muddled plot, thinly written characters, and choppy directing.”
