STX Entertainment Hires QED’s John Friedberg as President of International Sales

Friedberg oversaw sales and distribution at QED for the past 10 years

John Friedberg will be coming on board as President of International Sales at STX Entertainment, it was announced Wednesday by STX chairman Adam Fogelson and COO Thomas B. McGrath.

Friedberg joined the studio in Burbank this week, and will oversee all aspects of STX Entertainment’s international sales strategy for the slate of motion pictures to be produced and distributed by the company this year.

Friedberg had previously overseen sales and distribution at QED for the past 10 years. Most recently, he served as the Executive Vice President of International Distribution for Block Entertainment. During his time at Block and QED, he developed global distribution strategies for films such as David Ayer‘s “Fury,” starring Brad Pitt and “Dirty Grandpa,” directed by Dan Mazer and starring Robert De Niro and Zac Efron.

“With John’s addition to STX Entertainment, we have hired one of the brightest, most promising international sales executives working in the industry today,” said Fogelson. “John’s tremendous understanding of all aspects of film finance and international distribution gives him unique awareness of the opportunities in the international market and he is ideally suited to capitalize on the evolving international distribution platform.”

STX Entertainment is a fully integrated motion picture and television studio specializing in the production, marketing, and distribution of talent-driven films and television programming. It recently announced it will release between 12 and 15 films starting in 2016.

The company recently announced its first four theatrical releases: On August 7, the studio will release “The Gift,” a psychological thriller from Jason Blum‘s Blumhouse starring Jason Bateman, Rebecca Hall and Joel Edgerton. The three other films are titled “Secret in Their Eyes,” “The Boy” and “The Free State of Jones.”

In April, Cathy Schulman joined STX Entertainment as a top production executive. In June, Veteran music executive Jason Markey joined STX Entertainment as executive VP and head of music.
