Stunning First Title in NY Times’ New E-Book Series Launches Online

"Snow Fall: The Avalanche at Tunnel Creek" integrates moving graphics, satellite imaging, video and artfully crafted text

The New York Times released the first chapter of "Snow Fall: The Avalanche at Tunnel Creek" — the inaugural title in its new e-book series with Byliner — online on Thursday.

The six-part story by reporter John Branch follows a group of climbers in Washington who face a devastating avalanche while deep in the mountains.

And the design is stunning.

The online chapter pairs the prose with videos, satellite graphics of the mountain range and an interactive design that fades as readers scroll down.

A tagline at the end of the article says the complete story will appear online later this week.

The complete e-book became available for purchase at $2.99 on e-readers Monday.

As for the design of the book, "It is beautiful," Times spokeswoman Danielle Rhoades Ha told TheWrap. "We are very excited about this story and the multimedia elements."
