Steve Carell-Rashida Jones Cop Comedy Ordered to Series by TBS

“Angie Tribeca,” a spoof of police procedurals, will premiere next year

TBS has given a series order to a police comedy from “The Office” alum Steve Carell and his wife Nancy, with Rashida Jones starring.

The series, which Carell directed the pilot for and bears the working title “Angie Tribeca,” revolves around an eccentric-but-brilliant group of LAPD detectives who investigate crime, reveal way too much personal information and refuse to rest until justice has been served … sort of. Carell’s former “Office” mate Jones plays the title character, a lone wolf who’s capable, committed, strong and not thrilled when her boss (played by Jere Burns) tells her she has to work with a partner.

The series, which has received a 10-episode order, will premiere in 2015. Steve and Nancy Carell are executive producing through their Carousel Television, along with Campbell Smith (“The Daily Show with Jon Stewart”) and Thom Hinkle (“I Bet You”). The Carells also wrote the pilot.

The satire of police procedurals will boast a number of guest stars in its opening episode including Alfred Molina (“Spider-Man 2”), Lisa Kudrow (“Friends”) and Gary Cole (“Office Space”).

Michael Wright, president, head of programming for TNT, TBS and Turner Classic Movies likened “Angie Tribeca” to “The Naked Gun” in the announcement of the series order.

“‘Angie Tribeca’ is a hilarious spoof of police procedurals in the spirit of ‘The Naked Gun,’ with a terrific cast and a wickedly funny point of view,” Wright said. “We’re proud to be working with the outstanding comedy talents behind Angie Tribeca, especially Nancy and Steve Carell and the incredibly talented Rashida Jones.”

On Wednesday, TBS also greenlit barbershop comedy “Buzzy’s” from “Will & Grace” team David Kohan and Max Mutchnick. Ashley Tisdale and George Wendt star on the sitcom, along with Lauren Lapkus.

The network also ordered “Your Family or Mine,” staring Kyle Howard and Kat Foster. “Ground Floor” co-creator Greg Malins wrote the script for Sony Pictures TV, and executive produces with FanFare’s Jamie Tarses.

Gale Mancuso directed the family comedy pilot; Richard Dreyfuss and JoBeth Williams co-star on the show.
